  • 1311 DR [Year of the Fist]
  • Zelphar Arunsun is crushed to death by a sorcerous hand of force. The perpetrator remains unknown to the Lords to this day (in truth, he was murdered by a lich of the Twisted Rune as a favor to the Shadow Thieves). Khelben the Elder secretly returns to Arunsun Tower after the death of his son. Over the next ten years, he trains his grandson and namesake Khelben the Younger). »

  • 1322 DR [Year of Lurking Death]
  • Khelben the Elder, disguising himself as Khelben the Younger, "claims the long-vacant Arunsun Tower as his own, renaming it after his new title of "the Blackstaff". »

  • 1344 DR [Year of Moonfall]
  • Mirtul Most High Moonpriestess Thurlara "Old Bones" Shaulauna, possessor of one of the rings of the Moonweb, Shelmroun, is missing. Her hand however is found, missing the middle finger (where Selunites customarily wear magic rings). The Selunites of the remote monastery of Corthoun, in the woods south of Loudwater (the nearest Selunite temple) had suffered a doppleganger infestation, one of which had replaced the High Moonlord Evren Thildaran, who was the possessor of one of the Moonweb rings, Amglaer. The battle between the priests and the shapeshifters ends with the temple in ruins.

    The Moonweb ring Tilithar is given by the Priestess of the High Moonlight to Blackstaff Tower and Lady Laeral, unfortunately the tower and the lady are illusions, and the ring and the priestess both vanish.

    Selunite priests beseech the goddess for guidance. She instructs them to guard the last ring, Enthandas, which was held at Tharynd in the mountains west of Dolphingulf. The temple is assaulted by feywings, darkenbeasts, and gargoyles, and the ring is lost.

    In the fall of this year, Selune manifests as moon radiance in every holy place of the faith and instructs her clergy that hence forth the rings of the Moonweb are no longer to be held in temples by ranking clergy but to wander the Realms in the hands of adventurers. The search for the rings however, continues. »

  • 1357 DR [Year of the Prince]
  • Khelben "Blackstaff" Arunsun travels to the stronghold of the band known as The Nine in the High Forest and rescues Laeral Silverhand from the evil influence of the Crown of Horns. Khelben takes Laeral to Waterdeep and Blackstaff Tower. There, they form a romantic bond, and Laeral becomes known in the city of Waterdeep as Lady Arunsun.
    Khelben stores the Crown of Horns in Blackstaff Tower behind powerful adjurations. »

  • 1365 DR [Year of the Sword]
  • Tsarra Chaadren becomes a senior apprentice to Khelben at Blackstaff Tower after seven years there, and begins teaching other apprentices. »

  • 1374 DR [Year of Lightning Storms]
  • Uktar 28 Blackstaff Tower in Waterdeep is breached when three artifacts (one of them being the Crown of Horns) are brought into close proximity. »

  • Feast of the Moon Khelben "Blackstaff" Arunsun brings together many powerful mages in order to restore the denizens of the lost city of Miyeritaar's High Mages and cleanse part of the High Moor. In order to make the magic permanent, he and the Grand mage Ualair the Silent sacrifice themselves to create Rhymanthiin, the Hidden City of Hope.

    Laurel Silverhand Arunsun is pregnant with Khelben's twin children.

    After his death, Khelben's spirit remained in Blackstaff Tower to guide and advise future Blackstaffs.

    Tsarra Chaadren, the half-elf sorceress becomes the second Blackstaff. In public, she wears a magical illusion to make herself look like Khelben. »

  • 1399 DR [Year of the Fallen Friends]
  • Tsarra Chaadren, the second Blackstaff is killed in battle against a group of vampire-wizards in the Stump Bog. Most of the Moonstars and Tsarra's heir also fall against this coven of undead. Kyriani Agrivar retrieves Tsarra's blackstaff, and returns it to Blackstaff Tower for safekeeping. Upon her arrival, she proclaims herself the new (third) Blackstaff from atop Blackstaff Tower, with Open Lord Caladorn at her side. This form of proclamation of the inheritance to the title of Blackstaff becomes tradition. »

  • 1415 DR [Year of Slaves Arcane]
  • Krehlan Arunsun and the Grand Mages of Rhymanthiin dissipated the kiira n’vaelhar which once held the spirits and combined knowledge of the first three Blackstaffs, and bounded its magic to Blackstaff Tower and its twin in Rhymanthiin, N’Vaerymanth. »

  • 1479 DR [Year of the Ageless One]
  • Marpenoth 20 Samark Dhanzscul, the Blackstaff, is slain by Khondar "Ten-Rings" Naomal and his son, Centiv.

    When Samark's power flowed into Vajra Safahr, Khondar kidnaps her as part of a plot to obtain access to Blackstaff Tower and rule the city. Khondar tortures her to obtain the secrets needed to enter Blackstaff Tower. Centiv begins impersonating Samark for the next 2 months, using magic to conceal his appearance, or to prevent people from revealing the truth.

    Khondar is able to acquire enough knowledge from Vajra before her rescue by Renaer Neverember and friends to enter Blackstaff Tower. He and his son Centiv enter the tower, but when Khondar sees that he needs more keys to disable the wards of the tower, he abandons his son to his fate. Khondar later acquires the six magical keys needed to disable the wards and on Nightal 12, attempts to enter the tower. Vajra, who had assumed the position of the Blackstaff by this time, summons spectral hounds that tears Khondar to shreds. His animated skeleton continues to swirl around the tower to be chased and ripped up by the illusions of the hounds as a warning to potential intruders.

    Samark's spirit joins the rest of the Blackstaffs as part of Blackstaff Tower. »
