  • The Zulkir of Necromancy Nyressa Flass, known as "the Vampire Zulkir", is slain by a cabal of Red Wizard foes led by Szass Tam, who is named her successor. Tam keeps Nyressa around as a skeleton patrolling his property. »

  • 1159 DR [Year of the Cloven Stones]
  • Szass Tam, Zulkir of Necromancy in Thay, is forced to become a lich after an abortive invasion of Rashemen. »

  • 1201 DR [Year of Embers]
  • An invasion of Aglarond by a Thayan alliance of wizards is narrowly defeated. The failure of this invasion sees Szass Tam slay the Zulkir of Illusion, Nymor Thrul. »

  • 1222 DR [Year of the Horn]
  • The Harpstar Wars end, and the surviving Harper veterans who return to Faerun find the organization under the sway of the self-styled Harper King, the lich Thavverdasz, and also in conflict with the Cult of the Dragon. The final battles see the death of the Harper King at the hands of Szass Tam, Zulkir of Thay, who is in turn defeated by Elminster of Shadowdale, bringing the Harpers into conflict with Thay for the first time. »

  • 1323 DR [Year of Dreamwebs]
  • In Thay, the Zulkir of Enchantment leads an attempt to control the minds of influential people through their dreams. The efforts of the Red Wizards are eventually thwarted. »

  • 1359 DR [Year of the Serpent]
  • The Tuigan Horde attacks Thay. Although a small scouting force of Tuigans was defeated by Thayan magic, General Batu Min Ho proved a far worthier foe. Thousands of gnolls and the vaunted Griffon Legion are defeated at the mouth of Shar's Pass. Zulkir Szass Tam arranges a truce with the Tuigans and builds a great portal to transport them north to Rashemen.

    The Tuigans besiege and destroy Citadel Rashemar, with the main force moving west across the High Country to attack forces rallied by the Witches at the Lake of Tears. Pinned by the Thayan army south of Lake Mulsantir, the largest force of Rashemi berserkers is unable to support the Witches, who can only delay the immense horde.

    Thousands of refugees stream across Lake Ashane fleeing the Tuigan Horde. A few of the more determined head toward Uthmere and settle along the Great Road. To this day, the people of the Great Dale refer to these people as "the newcomers". »

  • 1362 DR [Year of the Helm]
  • Maligor, Zulkir of Alteration of the Red Wizards of Thay, attempts to wrest control of the nation from the Council of Zulkirs. His plan might have worked were it not for the intervention of agents of the Harpers and the lich Szass Tam, Zulkir of Necromancy. »

  • 1367 DR [Year of the Shield]
  • Marpenoth A Red Wizard named Rooltasz Tesurpar develops an awesome killing spell he calls the red wind and uses it to completely annihilate two villages (both of which were ruled by his rivals). Several zulkirs demand that he turn over the spell and three Red Wizards are killed trying to steal it. Rooltasz seems to go into hiding after a spell battle. Land surrounding Thay worry that Rooltasz may misuse the spell, or worse, that the spell does wind up in the hands of the zulkirs. »

  • A major earthquake destroys much of Eltabbar in Thay as the Zulkir Szass Tam releases the demon lord Eltab from his centuries long imprisonment. Using the Death Moon Orb, Tam was able to force Eltab to sit in the artifact, Thakorsil's Sear. he then begins casting the Ritual of Twin Burnings to inscribe the nine Runes of Chaos upon the seat where Eltab is held (by Thakorsil's Seat). This causes an area where divination magic cannot penatrate (which prevents the Simbul from observing Thay). Szass Tam's plan to bind the demon lord to his service are thwarted (by a party of adventurers sent by the Simbul), and Eltab flees to a demoncyst beneath Thaymount. »

  • 1368 DR [Year of the Banner]
  • Thay places enclaves in Cimbar, Phsant, Proskur, and Tsurlagol. The zulkirs ramp up the production of magic items for export.
    The enclave at Phsant is an instant hit all along the Golden Way. »

  • 1371 DR [Year of the Unstrung Harp]
  • The zulkirs of Thay, tired of incessant battles with Aglarond, offer peace. The Simbul accepts with reservations. »

  • 1373 DR [Year of Rogue Dragons]
  • Kythorn 3 Aided by Zulkir Szass Tam, Tharzienne Uskevren unwittingly releases Eltab from his imprisonment beneath the Thaymount. Wielding the Crimson Gold, Tazi and her companions confront the tanar'ri lord and his army of Blooded Ones. In defeat, Eltab is magically transported to the Citadel of Conjurers in Impiltur by ancient bindings cast upon him by wizards of Narfell over one thousand years ago. »

  • 1375 DR [Year of Risen Elfkin]
  • Mirtul 5 Druxus Rhym, Zulkir of Transmutation, is murdered in his apartments in Bezantur (which was arranged by Szass Tam). »

  • Mirtul 25 Samas Kul, Master of the Guild of Foreign Trade, is elected Zulkir of Transmutation. »

  • Kythorn 5 Mari Agneh is transformed by the Blood fiend Tsagoth into his likeness, a human/bloodfiend hybrid. She then kills Aznar Thrul, Zulkir of Evocation and Tharchion of the Priador. This event was aided by Szass Tam. »

  • Kythorn 10 Szass Tam, Zulkir of Necromancy, is blocked by his fellow Zulkirs from being elevated to regent of Thay. »

  • Kythorn 27 After Szass Tam's plan to march an army south and seize Bezantur is slowed by the Griffon Legion, the Zulkir of Necromancy and the six other zulkirs settle in for a long civil war. »

  • 1385 DR [Year of Blue Fire]
  • Yaphyll, zulkir of divination is taken prisoner by Szass Tam, binding her with the Death moon orb and Thakorsil's Seat, powerful items of domination. He forced Yaphyll to perform the most powerful divination known to her order no matter the consequences to her own well-being, and to tell him how to arrange for a decisive victory over the other zulkirs. She performs the task and tells Szass to lay a trap at the Keep of Sorrows. Then she leaves him with another vision:

    The white queen is troubled but can't say why. The black queen hates the white and gives the assassin a black coat. The assassin steals upon the white queen. She can't see him gliding through the shadows. The sword screams. The white queen falls. Her city falls. Stones fall in the cavern to crush the soothsayer. The tree burns and thrashes in agony. Branches break. Branches twist and grow together..."

    At the end of the vision Yaphyll was surrounded by a blue flame and broke free of Szass Tam's power. The lich killed her with his poisonous touch trying to regain control over the diviner.

    As Yaphyll predicted, the fight at the Keep of Sorrows turns into Szass Tam's favor. With the help of the Death Moon Orb, Szass tries to coerce his former ally Dmitra Flass, into fighting for his side. But then the Spellplague hits. The Death Moon Orb explodes in Szass Tam's hand, freeing Dmitra of it's power. Szass is hit by a wave of azure fire, a result of the Spellplague, rendering his magic close to useless and burning the flesh from his face and hands. The lich flees from the scene by the help of Xingax.

    By revealing to Malark Springhill why he killed Druxus Rhym, the lich convinces the spymaster to switch sides and work for him and his greater cause henceforth.

    In order to learn more about the ways of magic in the time of the spellplague Tam summons Bane, sacrificing the tharchion Pyras Autorian in the ritual. Bane makes a bargain with the lich and grants him great power. Szass in turn surrenders his soul after 1000 years had passed when his quest of conquering Thay was completed.

    Szass summons a dream vestige to turn the tide in his favor. He succeeds in beating the legions of the zulkirs, chasing them all the way to Bezantur. His undead legions and loyal priests of Bane further force the zulkirs to leave the town aboard vessels. Szass summons the bodies of drowned men and also undead aquatic beasts for a final and lethal victory over the zulkirs. Accompanied by a fleet of warships made from darkness, Szass follows the fleeing zulkirs, entangling them in a marine war. His enemies and the zulkir Nevron's conjured denizens of the infernal oceans proved quite adept at sea fight, beating back his undead minions. Szass conjurs the dream vestige again, finally exhausting his magical powers bestowed by Bane. When Bareris defeated the dream vestige and the zulkir's forces beat Szass Tam's minions, the lich and Malark withdrew to the Thaymount, the lich being content with his conquered lands. Szass didn't bother chasing the remaining zulkirs any more, leaving Aloar and the Wizard's Reach to them not fearing any retribution by the depleted zulkir's forces. He reveals to Malark, that he found a book once in possession of Fastrin the Delver. »

  • 1478 DR [Year of the Dark Circle]
  • The exiled Thayan Zulkirs lead their army into Thay accompanied by Aoth Fezim's Griffon Legion and Braeris Anskuld in an attempt to stop Szass Tam's plan to destroy the multiverse and build it anew as he sees fit.

    Lallara Mediocros (Zulkir of Abjuration), Malark Springhill, Samas Kul (Zulkir of Transmutation), Braeris Anskuld, Nevron (Zulkir of Conjuration), and Lauzoril (Zulkir of Evocation) die fighting Tam.

    After defeating Szass Tam, Aoth Fezim leads the Brotherhood of the Griffon into Impiltur to fight a demon-worshiping cult. The Brotherhood is betrayed by a noble and is forced to retreat, later finding employment in Chessenta. »
